Principality Medical Ltd
19 th & 20 th October 2006
The first day began with an introduction to colour perception by Christine Kinsey, a senior lecturer in Art and Design. During her lecture she demonstrated, using her palettes and colour wheel, the absolute full extent of the colour spectrum. We then experimented at our individual benches using shades of these colours to create every attainable hue.
The lecture proved to me the importance of returning to and understanding the crucial basic principles of colour and how to implement this knowledge when colour matching a facial / body prosthesis.
After coffee, Peter Evans introduced us to five volunteer sitters all studying stage make up and special effects. He then demonstrated how to colour match an ear using the M511 Maxillofacial Silicone and each of us, with the assistance of the sitters, did the same.
The next day we continued using pigments and flocking to pack another ear and also a nose following a demonstration given by Alan Bocca. After lunch we used the Extrinsic Colouring kit to finish the prostheses.
There was plenty of time during both days to experiment with all of these materials and try out new techniques and every opportunity to ask any questions (of which I asked many – Alan and Peter will run away when they next see me!)…and by the way if anyone needs the white flocking – it will be on my bench!
Leo and Mark were good hosts, the course was very well organised and informative with excellent demonstrations by Peter and Alan. We were warmly welcomed, enjoyed good food and were given an extensive tour of behind the scenes at the end of the day.
Whatever level of experience you have as a Prosthetist I would highly recommend attending this course.
