Statement regarding the statutory registration of IMPT's

Dear Colleague,

You may be considering the current situation regarding statutory regulation of Maxillofacial Prosthetists in the UK.

As you are aware, registration with the Health Profession Council, as a part of the Healthcare Scientists group, has been delayed until at least 2010. Additionally, there is the forthcoming July 31st deadline for Dental Technicians to register with the GDC.

I am able to inform you that IMPT Council officers will again be meeting with the Department of Health on the 6th February. We are also still in conversation with the GDC regarding any 'interim' registration initiatives.

To this end I ask you to hold any registration choices in abeyance until we gain further clarity regarding this most important issue. We are, of course, aware that whatever direction taken by our profession there could be serious implications regarding freedom of practice and clinical accountability for Maxillofacial Prosthetists in the future.

There will be further discussion about state registration at our AGM, The Gloucester Royal Hospital, on 14th May, and any further meetings or seminars the IMPT should organise.

I thank you for your patience.

Miss Sarah Parkinson BSc (Hons) MIMPT
Chair of the IMPT
