An MSc in Prosthetic Facial Rehabilitation for MPT's who wish to obtain advanced knowledge by Flexible Learning
The blended learning team at the King's College London Dental Institute is delighted to announce that its latest Flexible Graduate programme, an MSc in Maxillofacial Prosthetic Rehabilitation is now available for students to study. The course is designed for busy Maxillofacial Prosthetists to develop their technical skills and who would like the opportunity of experiencing advanced techniques and digital technology whilst continuing to work in their practice in any country in the world.
With over 20 years experience in distance and, more recently, online education the King's College London Dental Institute has pioneered distance learning in dentistry and currently provides postgraduate teaching for over 200 students in 40 countries.
The Maxillofacial Prosthetic Rehabilitation course takes a blended learning approach, with a residential course in either London or Pune (India) and twice monthly online support from tutors (including access to videos showing dental techniques and e-library resources). The face-to-face courses are 6 and 9 days in duration and cover the necessary practical training, taught by a panel of experts from the King’s College London faculty and leading international experts in the field.
The programme provides opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate extended knowledge, understanding and advanced skills in the treatment of patients requiring prosthetic facial rehabilitation. The course will cover a broad range of treatments for replacement of missing hard and soft tissues using both traditional and advanced digital technologies. The course will also include a specific module on the psychological and social support required in facial rehabilitation and will cover communication, counselling skills and an appreciation of the psychosocial effects of surgical treatment for those living with head and neck cancer and facial disfigurement.

"We cross geographical, political and cultural boundaries" |
The course has been designed to provide theory, support and discussion groups by online training using dedicated virtual learning environment. This innovative programme offers 6 modules that can be studied at your own pace over 3 years through part time distance learning training to obtain 180 credits at level 7 for an MSc degree from King’s College London. Partial completion or early exit may result in the award of a Diploma.
Dr Brian Millar Director of Distance Learning at the Dental Institute (and also Consultant in Restorative Dentistry and Specialist in Prosthodontics) considers that ‘distance learning’ is no longer an adequate description. It’s ‘blended’ because it’s a combination of different media plus a residential each year.
“We cross geographical, political and cultural boundaries,’ adds Millar, who was recently appointed Visiting Professor in Restorative Dentistry at SDM. ‘There are technical advantages, too, over traditional textbook learning, like clicking on an image to enlarge it or reveal more information.”
